Aimed as an entry-level product, the IC-718 continues all the traditions of high quality engineering that you would expect from Icom. Conveniently sized and easy to operate, the IC-718 utilises all the latest RF and digital technology and is designed to be one of the most practical rigs ever! The IC-718 offers an excellent overall specification coupled with ease of use. The first thing that strikes you about the IC-718 is its similarity to the IC-R75 and more importantly that the speaker is mounted on the front panel of the transceiver. With the speaker facing the operator audio can now be more clearly heard during operation.
The IC-718 features a clean 100-Watts transmitter for SSB and CW and a built in electronic keyer for CW and 40 watts output on AM. As you would expect, an all mode, general coverage receiver is built in and covers 30kHz -29.999 MHz. A newly designed PLL circuit has been adopted to improve Signal / Noise ratio characteristics. This combined with a 4-element system mixer ensures truly superior performance.
The IC-718 is equipped with a minimum number of switches and controls for ease of use. For example, the 10-key pad on the front panel allows you to directly enter an operating frequency, or access a memory channel. All popular operating modes are offered; USB, LSB, CW, RTTY (FSK) and AM, in addition there is a level adjustable noise blanker, a variety of scanning functions as well as a hand microphone and electronic keyer as standard.
The auto tuning steps function speeds up tuning through the bands but only activates when turning the dial quickly. The band stacking register ensures that you always return to the last used frequency when changing bands.
To reject interference, the IC-718 has an IF shift function which shifts the centre frequency of the IF passband electronically to reduce nearby interference. A microphone compressor ensures really punchy audio to get your signal through in difficult operating conditions. The compression level is easily adjustable from the front panel. This function really makes a difference when propagation conditions are poor.
RF gain control is combined with the squelch control. The RF gain adjusts minimum response receiver gain and improves reception on the noisier bands. An electronic keyer with a variable dot/dash ratio control is built in. The CW pitch is variable from 300-900 Hz and the keyer speed goes up to 60 wpm! Full break in capability is available with an adjustable break-in delay.
The IC-718 has a total of 101 memory channels, which stores operating frequency and mode. The IC-718 has a number of options available to enhance the model including UT-106 DSP unit to further improve receiver performance, CR-338 High Stability Crystal improve the frequency stability to within . 5ppm, UT-102 voice synthesiser, which gives the IC-718 a clear electronically generated voice etc.
The IC-746 achieved a fantastic reputation as a powerful HF base station that gave excellent performance at a competitive price. Well its successor is here…the IC-7400. Covering HF, 50MHz and 144MHz bands, with the same powerful 100W of output power, the IC-7400 carries on the reputation earned by the IC-746, but offers improved performance and a wide range of new features that are destined to set a new benchmark in this important market. The biggest news of all is that this new transceiver has adopted the same IF DSP as the IC-756PRO and its successor, the IC-756PRO2. ICOM has used a 32-bit floating point DSP and 24-bit AD/DA converter at the heart of the IC-7400, which makes this base station fresh and exciting. Furthermore, the digital IF filter shape is selectable from sharp to soft for both SSB and CW modes. Now let's just see what else this new rig has to offer the demanding Amateur.
32-bit floating point DSP and 24-bit AD/DA converter
The IC-7400 adopts the 32-bit floating point DSP and 24-bit AD/DA converter in the IF stage. This combination dramatically improves the precision and the scale of the signal processing and provides a wide dynamic range from HF to 144MHz band.
Digital IF filter
DSP is used for the IF filters on all bands. This means no optional IF crystal filters are required for bandwidth selection. Fifty-one different passband widths are available according to operator needs from 50Hz to 3600Hz.
Filter Shapes
No optional crystal filters required or needed! 51 built-in, adjustable filters allow for incredible selectivity. The tuning shapes for CW & SSB are independently selectable. You’ve got to try it to believe it!
AGC loop management
Digital IF filter and manual notch are included in the AGC loop controlled by the DSP unit. It rejects blocking by extremely strong adjacent signals out of the filter pass bands. Therefore, you will never suffer from blocking of the AGC gain. In addition, the AGC constants are adjustable for each operating mode (slow, medium, and fast pre-set).
HF + 50MHz + 144MHz all band coverage
The IC-7400 covers the 1.8MHz to 144MHz amateur bands in all modes (including RTTY). Also the receiver continuously covers from 30kHz to 60MHz and 108-174MHz.*Specifications guaranteed 1.8-29.99, 50-54MHz and 144-148MHz only.
Powerful 100W output for all bands
The IC-7400 generates 100W of RF output power not only for HF and 50MHz, but also for the 144MHz band.
PSN (Phase Shift Network)
All of the modulation and demodulation, including FM and RTTY utilises the DSP unit. Especially in the SSB mode, the PSN generates a very clear and high quality transmit signal. The SSB demodulation reproduces received signals with a high S/N (Signal-to-Noise) Ratio that is 10dB better than that of the IC-746.
Digital twin PBT (Pass Band Tuning) capability The digital twin PBT actually changes the IF passband. The twin PBT narrows and shifts the IF passband to effectively eliminate interfering signals. This is useful during crowded band conditions such as pileups, or contests etc.
Notch functions
The manual notch function attenuates beat tones. The automatic notch function can eliminate 2 or more interfering signals simultaneously.
Making its debut at the Leicester Amateur Radio show is the latest transceiver in the IC-756PRO series. The IC-756PROIII incorporates many of the features that made its predecessors so successful. However, the integration of the latest technology employed in the IC-7800 such as receiver technology, +30dBm class IP3, miniscope makes this new rig the very pinnacle of the IC-756PRO series.
+30dBm class IP3 (in 14MHz band), Excellent distortion resistance characteristics
The IC-756PROIII design focuses on distortion-free receiver performance. Basic analogue and digital technology used in the IC-7800 has been incorporated into the IC-756PROIII receiver. The front-end mixer at the RF stage is designed in a 4-element configuration. At the BPF switching stage, diodes which have superior wide dynamic range frequency characteristics and distortion-free characteristics are used.
Magnetic saturation sometimes occurs in traditional coils when a strong signal is received. To avoid this magnetic saturation, large inductors have been used at the RF stage.
The 15 kHz crystal roofing filter uses the same component as the IC-7800 in the fundamental mode to provide good distortion-free characteristics. Finally, each stage’s level distribution behind the 1st mixer stage and the AGC gain are optimised. The IC-756PROIII realises +30dBm class IP3*. (in 14MHz band)
* Under the following conditions: Receive frequency 14.2MHz, Input frequencies 14.3MHz and 14.4MHz, Pre-amp OFF, mode USB BW: 2.4 kHz
Newly designed pre-amplifiers
The IC-756PROIII has two pre-amplifiers, which offer advantages in bad band conditions. Both pre-amplifiers of the IC-756PROIII have basically the same circuit construction as the IC-7800’s preamplifiers. The preamp-1 is a noiseless feedback type with push-pull amplifiers. It has a high intercept point and covers a wide frequency range. The preamp-2 is a high gain pre-amplifier using bipolar transistors. It offers excellent advantages in using narrow band antennas such as a small loop or short Yagi antenna. This combination will provide the optimum receiver performance under any conditions.
+Real time spectrum scope with mini scope function
The real time spectrum scope is now an indispensable tool for high-class HF radios. The IC-756PROIII’s spectrum scope adds the mini scope function answering the many requests from end users to add this feature. The mini scope function allows you to monitor the scope screen while you are using other function menus. For example, you can monitor the scope screen even while you are changing the IF filter shape or other level settings. The scope range can be set in 4 steps ±12.5 kHz, ±25 kHz, ±50 kHz and ±100 kHz, centred on the receiving frequency. In addition, the spectrum scope has 3 levels of attenuator (10dB, 20dB and 30dB).
+8 channels of RTTY transmit memory
The IC-756PROIII has 8 channels of RTTY transmit memory. You can edit up to 62 character pre-fixed messages for each memory channel without a PC or other external unit. The transmit memory is displayed on the screen so that you will not send the wrong message. The built-in RTTY demodulator and decoder allow you to check the callsign of the station instantly. It is not necessary for you to prepare an external demodulator when you receive an RTTY message. The twin peak audio filter controlled by the DSP Unit reduces the interference, which appears between tones. The tuning indicator visually assists you to zero-in to the RTTY signal, which makes important tuning more easy.
* When transmitting an RTTY message on site, a Terminal Unit, TNC or PC and dedicated software is required.
+SSB transmit bandwidth adjustable
The built-in audio equaliser has separate bass and treble adjustment for a total of 121 combinations, so you can tone your voice up or down when you want. In addition, the SSB transmit bandwidth is selectable from 100, 300, 500Hz at the high-pass edge, and 2500, 2700, 2900Hz at the low-pass edge respectively. 3 types of high and low combinations can be stored in the memory. With this flexibility of DSP based waveform shaping, transmit audio quality is adjustable depending on the operating situation.
+@ code for memory keyer
The 4 memory keyer messages store often-used CW sentences. Each memory has up to 55 character capability. The “@” code used in e-mail addresses can be sent from the memory keyer. The “@” code, (• – – • – • –) has been added to the International Morse code list recently. In addition, the serial contest number can be counted automatically. Ø19 cut number function is included.
+Other new features
• 2 clocks ... the IC-756PROIII has 2 clocks built-in which show both local and UTC time at once.
• Screen saver function ... when the IC-756PROIII has not been operated for a while, a screen saver will be shown on the display.
+RETAINED FEATURES
32-bit floating-point DSP and 24-bit AD/DA converter
The 32-bit floating-point DSP and 24-bit AD/DA converter maximises the IC-756PROIII digital capabilities. This makes it possible to work a lot of digital features. In practice, the AD/DA converter realises surprisingly wide dynamic range. It provides clean and clear transmit, and crystal clear audio reception.
+AGC loop operation
The digital IF filter and manual notch are included in the AGC loop controlled by the DSP unit. It basically rejects blocking by extremely strong adjacent signals out of the filter pass bands. Therefore, you will rarely suffer from blocking of the AGC gain. In addition, the AGC constants are easily adjustable for each operating mode.
+Sharp and soft IF filter shape are independently selectable for SSB and CW mode
Sharp and soft IF filter shapes for SSB and CW have become part of the DSP unit programming. You can change the filter shape to pick up desired signals, even while listening to the signals.
SSB sharp filter; for selectivity and audio quality
The ideal filter shape factor and flatness in the receive bandwidth, that only DSP can achieve. This setting eliminates adjacent signals that are out of the intended bandwidth, and reproduces the signal in the bandwidth with high fidelity. This is ideal for ragchew and placing importance on the receive audio quality.
SSB soft filter; improves the clarity of weak signals
This filter has a rounded filter shape. It keeps down the band noise in high and low frequencies, and improves the signal-to-noise ratio. This setting makes it easy to distinguish very weak signals, even in low level noise, especially in the 50MHz band. This filter also has sharp skirt characteristics, similar to the SSB sharp filter
CW sharp filter, ultimate sharpness
The ideal ‘sharp’ filter shape factor, only digital technology can bring you. This setting is suitable for picking up weak DX signals in crowded band conditions. The signal quality, not seen with analogue filters, can be clearly recognised.
CW soft filter; broadens the filter skirts
This filter improves the audio quality at the edge of the filter skirt. This setting is useful when you run into pileups in contests or in DX peditions.
+Digital Twin PBT
The digital twin PBT, using the DSP unit, narrows the passband width to efficiently reduce interfering signals by in 50Hz steps. IF passband width, IF shift width and IF shift direction are indicated on the LCD display for easy recognition.
+RF speech compressor
The 32-bit DSP is used for the RF speech compressor providing the maximum punch without the fuzzy sound. Even when the compression is set at a higher level, the IC-756PROIII increases the readability without distortion. The tone gradation is very similar to the original sound so that the IC-756PROIII provides excellent audio at any compression level.
+Manual notch function and automatic notch function
Icom UK Ltd is pleased to provide details of the IC-7700 HF/50MHz transceiver. The IC-7700 shares many features with its “big brother”, the world famous IC-7800. With two independent DSP units, a +40dBm* 3rd order intercept point and ultra wide dynamic range to name but a few of these features, this transceiver is expected to a major success within the contesting community and the Amateur world as a whole.
Double conversion super-heterodyne system
While multiple IF stages often become a cause of signal distortion and spurious emissions, the IC-7700 utilizes a simple double conversion super-heterodyne system using an image rejection mixer. A high performance D-MOS FET array for the 1st mixer stage is infused with a signal from the high-level C/N, high-drive Local Oscillator from the PLL unit. This mixer reduces signal distortion through IF processing and provides a high-fidelity signal to the DSP unit.
110dB dynamic range and +40dBm 3rd order Intercept Point (IP3)
The IC-7700 uses mechanical relay BPF switching, digital preselector, three roofing filters and a simple double super-heterodyne system The IC-7700 provides superior performance in sensitivity, and a superb dynamic range of 110dB, +40dBm IP3 (even in strict USB mode (2.4kHz filter width)).
More than +110dBm 2nd order intercept point (IP2)
More than +110dBm IP2 means the 2nd order distortion from strong broadcast stations will be completely rejected.
* Measurement was made with custom made measuring equipment, due to normal signal generator (SG) and duplexers are limited to about +85dBm. The figure of IP2 is typical value
High specification inband IMD
Inband IMD (intermodulation distortion) is undesired modulation (2nd, 3rd or higher order) caused by the non-linear processing of received multiple signals. The IC-7700 has superior IMD figures. These differences in the IMD figures will be evident especially in CW mode. The sound of the received audio will change and you will be able to copy a weak signal buried in internal distortion or noise.
Band pass filter and mechanical relays
To eliminate as much distortion as possible, the use of semi-conductors has been reduced to a minimum in the high amplitude switching circuit. The IC-7700 also uses large coil condensers in the filter structure. Mechanical relays and large toroidal coils and condensers which are resistant to magnetic saturation are also used to prevent distortion before the input of the band pass filter, and provide superior linearity.
DIGI-SEL (Digital pre-selector) function
The DIGI-SEL function rejects unwanted suppression by out-of-pass band interference at the primary stage of signal processing. It is useful to reject unwanted out of band interference from multi-multi operation or strong broadcast stations. Within the HF bands, the DIGI-SEL automatically tracks the intended signal at a minimum of 2 kHz steps keeping the pre-selector’s bandwidth cantered on the operating frequency.
The DIGI-SEL has a sharp-pointed very narrow peak characteristic in the pass band. Together with the band pass filter it greatly attenuates out of the pass band. This combination reduces 2nd, 3rd and even higher order IMD components immensely. The centre frequency of the pre-selector is manually adjustable from the DIGI-SEL tuning knob on the front panel.
Pre-amplifiers
The IC-7700 has a total of 4 pre-amplifiers, two for HF bands and two for 50MHz. The purpose of pre-amplifiers is to improve receiver sensitivity; for the pursuit of higher gain and a better noise figure. The IC-7700 employs a noiseless feedback design with push-pull amplifiers. Using feedback transformers, the pre-amplifiers provide a high IP3 while keeping a low noise figure.
1st mixer
The mixer element SD5400, used in the IC-7700 applies a 16V peak to peak voltage LO signal. Icom’s wideband power-amplifier technical knowledge is used in this mixer to generate such a high-level LO signal.
Two AGC Loops
The IC-7700 has two Automatic Gain Control loops. The first AGC loop prevents the saturation of the 1st IF amplifier from strong signals out of the Band Pass Filter bandwidth, and improves the dynamic range against adjacent signals. The second AGC loop detects the AGC voltage at the digital IF filter output which only passes the intended signal without causing AGC blocking. In addition to the preset AGC time constants (slow, medium and fast), the manual AGC volume provides flexible detailed AGC tuning.
Three filters including 3kHz
The IC-7700 employs three filters of 15kHz, 6kHz and 3kHz before the 1st amplifier. Icom have used special customized high specification devices to improve IMD and achieve better impedance characteristics. As a result, the 3kHz roofing filter provides approximately 134dB of blocking dynamic range and allows you to pull out a weak signal while blocking strong adjacent signals.
* At 14.1MHz receive, with 5kHz separation of interference signal.
2nd image rejection mixer
The image rejection mixer for the 2nd stage rejects image spurious through IF processing. In conjunction with the roofing filters, rejection characteristics of more than 100 dB can be realized. The result of the stable operation of the analogue image rejection mixer makes it possible to design a simplified receiver circuit, and improve the distortion-free performance of the receiver.
High stability OCXO unit
The frequency control of these circuits is done by the high stability Oven Controlled Crystal Oscillator unit. This OCXO unit has ±0.05ppm high stability on the basis of temperature. That means that within the specified temperature range, the frequency will deviate only 5Hz out of every 100 million Hz! This specification is equivalent to that specialized measuring equipment. Also, a 10MHz reference frequency can be the input/output for external equipment
7-inch wide colour TFT LCD
The large 7-inch (800 × 400 pixels) TFT colour display shows operating frequencies various settings and operating conditions as well as spectrum scope, S-meter and RTTY/PSK31 decoded messages. The S-meter shows near analogue like needle swings that are smooth and accurate. In addition to the 3 styles of digital meter, the IC-7700 has digital multi-function bar graphic meters to show various conditions such as Final PA temperature, PA voltage etc. Further more, the IC-7700 has a VGA connector for an external monitor and an S-meter connector for an external analogue S-meter.
USB ports on the front panel
Two USB ports on the front panel, allowing you to easily connect USB type keyboard or USB memory stick to save transceiver settings, update firmware, or transfer settings to other IC-7700's.
RTTY /PSK31 operation without PC connection
4 antenna connectors
The IC-7700 has 4 antenna connectors (ANT1 to ANT4) with an automatic antenna selector. Once you program the operating band to the antenna memory, the antenna memory automatically selects the antenna as you change the operating band. Each antenna can be set to the antenna usage type such as for Tx/Rx use, Rx only* use and off line. The antenna switch button allows you to change operating antenna temporarily.
* Rx setting is available for ANT4 only.
Triple band stacking register With the push of a band button, the band stacking register allows you to simply bring back the last three operating settings (including antenna setting) per band for simple recall. This function is convenient when you operate 3 modes such as SSB, CW and RTTY on one band.
Real time spectrum scope
With the dedicated DSP unit for the spectrum scope, the IC-7700 achieves 80dB of dynamic range at the signal input level. It also improves the scope response time and signal resolution, so that it is possible to accurately tune to the intended signal as you see it on the spectrum scope screen.
The spectrum scope range can be set independently from the receiving frequency. You can monitor the band condition between the selected sweep edges (Fixed mode), as well as sweep a selected band width centred on the receiving frequency in the scope screen (Centre mode). In addition, the scope has many features including scope attenuator (10dB/20dB/30dB), 2 types of marker (Transmit, Receiver) and Max hold function. The mini scope function is convenient for continuous monitoring even while adjusting the set mode.
Digital IF filter
When receiving a weak signal buried between adjacent channels, the DSP-based digital IF filter shows its superior filtering performance. Depending on the operating situation, for example handling a pile-up, or receiving a very weak signal, you can flexibly change sharp and soft filter shapes or narrow or shift the filter width, even while actually receiving a signal.
Manual notch filter and auto notch filter
The manual notch filter controlled by the DSP unit has extremely sharp characteristics and provides more than 70dB of attenuation. The notch filter width is selectable from 3-types, allowing you to select the suitable filter width depending on the operating mode and band. It eliminates persistent beat tones without affecting the AGC loop function. And more, the automatic notch filter tracks 2 or more interfering signals such as beat signals and RTTY signals.
Digital twin PBT
The DSP-based digital IF filter of the IC-7700 blocks out signals out of the pass band, and keeps the in-band signal free of any distortion or depletion in quality. In addition, sharp and soft filter shapes are selectable. You get the signal reproduction you like to hear. The digital twin PBT eliminates interference and noise from the upper and lower sides by changing the IF filter bandwidth. The IF shift function allows you to shift or move the IF pass band from either side to hear the actual signal. The passband width, shift direction and steps (50Hz) are graphically displayed on the LCD.
Noise reduction
The 32-bit floating point DSP has excellent calculation performance, which processes complex and sophisticated algorithms. This allows the DSP to attenuate noise without delay and extracts noise-level signals. It is possible to vary the suppression level in 16 stages.
Variable noise blanker
The noise blanker provides significant reduction of pulse-type noise. The noise blanker allows the operator to change the threshold level as well as blank time parameter and attenuation level.
Digital Voice Recorder
The Digital Voice Recorder (DVR) is a convenient function for contests, DX-peditions, field day and even normal operation. Record your callsign, CQ, or other station information into a memory. Independent "Record (REC)" and "Play" buttons are on the front panel.
S/P DIF interface
The IC-7700 has the S/P DIF optical digital interface for audio output and modulation input. By connecting an external device* through a connection cable, flexible audio tuning is possible, while keeping good sound quality. * Third party connection cable, PC with S/P DIF supported sound board and software are required
New RX HPF/LPF setting
The IC-7700 has the RX HPF/LPF setting for each mode. The high-pass filter and low-pass filter are adjustable for each mode.
SSB data mode
When you narrow the IF filter passband to 500Hz or less in SSB mode or SSB-data mode operation, the IC-7700 automatically selects special band pass filters (BPF). The BPF automatically has a very sharp filter edge for better rejection of interfering signals like a CW filter. Along with the BPF setting, the IC-7700 has a 1/4-tuning step function for easier operation.
Firmware upgrade for maintaining the best performance
Icom will provide the latest firmware for owners of the IC-7700. Just download the latest firmware from the Icom web site whenever a new version has been uploaded, and update your IC-7700 via the USB memory.
200W output power at full duty cycle, full power operation
The IC-7700 uses two MRF150 power amplifiers connected in push-pull-parallel. The power amplifiers provide a reliable 200W of output power up to 54MHz. The effective quad cooling fan system makes it possible to generate 200W full power output even during full duty cycle operation. The digital PSN modulator using a dedicated DSP unit consistently reproduces an outstanding signal-to-noise ratio, providing clean and clear transmission. The PA amplifier works with 48V DC and provides all of the output power with low IMD in all bands.
Microphone equalizer and adjustable transmit bandwidth
The built-in audio equalizer has the separate bass and treble adjustment for a total of 121 combinations, so you can tone your voice up or down as you want. In addition, the transmit bandwidth is selectable from 100, 200, 300, 500Hz at the low-pass edge, and 2500, 2700, 2800, 2900Hz at the high-pass edge respectively. 3 types of high and low combinations can be stored in the memory as favourite settings. With this flexibility of DSP based waveform shaping, transmit audio quality is adjustable to your preference.
Memory keyer
The IC-7700's memory keyer has 4 channels with 55 characters for CW, 8 channels with 70 characters for RTTY and 8 channels with 70 characters for PSK31 operation. The memory keyer is convenient for programming station information, calling CQ and call sign for a DX-pedition or contest. Also, the CW memory keyer has other time saving functions such as automatic repeat, serial contest number auto-counter, and Morse cut number functions.
Icom has been developing radio communication equipment for over forty years. Its heritage has always been based on technical excellence from the first analogue PLL circuit in the IC-200, to the ground-breaking 32-bit floating point DSP of the IC-756PRO. Recent Ham radio stations increasingly use high power and high gain antennas that raise the field strength of unintended signals, and thus require a wider receiver dynamic range. Icom has developed the new flagship model IC-7800 which is a fusion of forty years analogue RF circuit development expertise, with cutting edge digital technology. The result is 110dB dynamic range, +40dB 3rd order intercept point in HF bands and other phenomenal performance features. The receivers combine various current and new technology, to obtain the +40dBm IP3, a specification never before achieved in Ham radio. Quite simply put, the IC-7800 is the ultimate Ham radio. Nothing else comes close!
+40dBm IP3 (3rd order Intercept Point)
Icom's 40 years of analogue RF circuit experience combined with cutting edge digital technology results in an astonishing 110dB receiver dynamic range and a +40dBm IP3 in the HF bands. A first in Ham radio!
To achieve this superior receiver performance, Icom's engineering team completely reviewed the whole analogue circuit and matched it to the DSP units. This allowed us to explore new technical dimensions such as a double conversion super-heterodyne system, mechanical relay BPF switching and two roofing filters.
Mechanical relay BPF (Band Pass filter) switching and two roofing filters
The IC-7800 uses highly reliable and durable mechanical relays for BPF switching instead of non-linear semi-conductors which cause distortion. The mechanical relay prevents 2nd order distortion at the primary stage of signal processing.
The IC-7800 has two roofing filters before the 1st IF amplifier stage. One is 15 kHz filter for FM mode and the other is 6kHz filter for SSB, CW, AM and data modes. The IC-7800 switches between these two roofing filters depending on operating mode. Typically, transceivers use only one broad 15 kHz roofing filter for all modes. This is not an optimal design for SSB, CW, or AM modes.
The two roofing filters dramatically improve the blocking characteristics from strong adjacent signals.
Automatic tracking pre-selector
The pre-selector works from 1.5MHz to 30MHz. The pre-selector automatically tracks the intended signal, keeping the pre-selector's bandwidth centred on the operating frequency at several kHz steps (minimum). The pre-selector rejects unwanted out of band interference from multi-multi operation or strong broadcast stations, as your first line of defence against interfering signals. The centre frequency of the pre-selector is adjustable from the DIGI-SEL tuning knob on the front panel.
Double conversion super-heterodyne system
While mixers often become a cause of signal distortion and spurious emissions, the IC-7800 utilises a double conversion super-heterodyne system using a newly developed image rejection mixer. A high performance D-MOS FET array for the 1st mixer stage is infused with a signal from the high-level C/N, high-drive Local Oscillator from the PLL unit. This new mixer reduces signal distortion through IF processing and provides a high-fidelity signal to the DSP unit.
AGC loop management using the DSP unit
The IC-7800 has two types of AGC loops. One of the AGC loops detects the AGC voltage at the BPF input in the DSP unit and feeds back to the 1st IF amplifier. This AGC loop prevents the saturation of the 1st IF amplifier from strong signals out of the BPF bandwidth, and improves the dynamic range against adjacent signals. The other AGC loop detects the AGC voltage at the digital IF filter output which has only passed the intended signal and draws the full potential from the digital IF filter. Combining the digital IF filter, manual notch, and the 1st IF stage, these are all controlled by the DSP unit. 110dB of ultra wide dynamic range in the receiver means the IF amplifier is distortion free from strong signals.
Two completely independent receiver circuits
The ultimate dual receiver performance is at your control; the receivers are completely independent all the way from the 4 antenna jacks, through the pre-selectors, DSP, signal detectors, front panel control, and right into the stereo headphone! The dual receiver allows you to receive two different bands simultaneously in different modes, with each receiver not causing any adverse affect to the other one. This true dual receiver takes your band hopping and contesting experience to the next level!
AGC Volume knob for fine tuning
In addition to the preset AGC time constants (slow, medium and fast), the manual AGC volume provides flexible detailed AGC tuning.
Digital IF filter
The digital IF filter has superior filtering performance and a distinguished shaping factor that demonstrates the power of 32-bit floating point DSP. The digital filter is completely free from deterioration due to deviations in band characteristics, temperature change, or mechanical vibration, all of which have likely been seen with analogue filters. The digital IF filter also provides excellent ripple characteristics and clean cut that have never been available with analogue filters. The filter shape is selectable from soft and sharp, depending on the purpose, operating band, band conditions, etc. It is also possible to set CW and SSB filter characteristics independently, and also select the filter shape while actually receiving a signal.
Manual notch filter with adjustable notch filter characteristics
The IC-7800's manual notch filter shape can be set in 3-steps for the various receiving conditions. The manual notch filter has extremely sharp characteristics for processing in the DSP and provides tremendous performance for attenuation levels of more than 70dB in all shapes. The DSP-based manual notch provides stable performance and completely shuts off undesired beat signals without affecting AGC gain. In addition, an automatic notch filter tracks and wipes off the beat signal and RTTY interference.
Four 32-bit floating point DSP units and 24-bit AD/DA converters
The IC-7800 uses four pairs of 32-bit floating point DSP units and 24-bit AD/DA converters. One for the transmitter, one for each receiver, and the final one for the spectrum scope. The DSP units deliver the phenomenal performance of the digital signal processing. A powerful combination born of Icom's analogue RF technology and experience.
200W output power at full duty cycle
The newly designed push-pull power MOS-FET amplifiers work with 48V DC and provide a powerful 200W of output power at full duty cycle with low IMD in all bands. The digital PSN modulator using a dedicated DSP unit consistently reproduces an outstanding signal-to-noise ratio, providing clean and clear transmission.
Ultra high stability OCXO unit
Your IC-7800 will be the reference point on the band with a standard stability of +/-0.05ppm! Even on the 6m band, that is less than 3Hz error from the Oven Controlled Crystal Oscillator! Also, a 10MHz reference frequency can be the input/output for external equipment.
RTTY /PSK31 operation without PC connection
The IC-7800 has a modulator and demodulator for the 2 major HF ham digital modes. Encode and decode of PSK31 and Baudot RTTY signals are possible by simply connecting a USB keyboard to the IC-7800. The twin peak audio filter improves RTTY reception. In addition, transmitted and received messages can be stored to the CF memory card and transferred to your PC.
Real time spectrum scope
With the dedicated DSP unit, the spectrum scope provides 80dB dynamic range of signal processing (the IC-756PROII is 60dB). The scope span can be set to +/-2.5 to +/-250kHz in 7 steps, providing wide band signal analysis. The monitor range can be set independently from the receiving frequency. You can monitor the band condition between the selected sweep edges, as well as sweep a selected band width centred on the receiving frequency in the scope screen.
In addition, the scope has many features including scope attenuator (10dB/20dB/30dB), 3 types of marker (Main band, Sub band, Transmit), Max hold function and Main- Sub band one touch switch. The mini scope function is convenient for continuous monitoring even while adjusting the set mode.
Microphone equaliser and adjustable transmit bandwidth
The built-in audio equaliser has the separate bass and treble adjustment for a total of 121 combinations, so you can tone your voice up or down as you want. In addition, the transmit bandwidth is selectable.
